While daydreaming about your upcoming move may be fun and exciting, moving day itself usually comes with a whole symphony of tasks to orchestrate, from last-minute forgotten to-do list items to all the packing and unpacking. Central Moving and Storage has been assisting with residential relocations around Orlando for nearly 40 years, and knows a few tricks to keep everything running smoothly on the day of the move.
Keep a Running List of Moving Day Tasks
Anyone who's ever moved houses can attest to how many little, unforeseen tasks wait until moving day to make themselves known. Did you grab that shovel leaning against the house? Do you have cash to tip your movers? Did you remember to say goodbye to the neighbors?
Start jotting down all the things you don't want to forget to do, and continue adding and crossing off items as you go. Some of these small tasks can easily slip your mind again if you don't keep track of them somewhere.
Label Boxes that will Immediately Need Opening
Most people don't finish unpacking every single last box the same day they move into their new home. You'll want to make sure the boxes you open first are the things you utilize every day, so be sure to label these boxes. While you probably don't need to immediately know where your winter sweaters are if you're moving in July, some of the things that you'll definitely want to label include:
- Toilet Paper
- Linens and Towels
- First Aid Kit
- Kitchenware
You may also have belongings you want to attend to first due to their financial or sentimental value, and should be labeled as well before being placed in the back of the moving truck.
Make Other Arrangements for Pets and Kids
Don't underestimate the amount of attention your child or pet might need out of you on moving day! Moving can be stressful for the children and furry friends in our lives, which could result in them constantly being underfoot while you run from room to room and coordinate with movers.
It can also be dangerous for children to be around the house on moving day. Objects that are typically out of reach of little kids may be more accessible, plus it may be hard to keep track of their exact whereabouts while moving heavy items or piles of boxes.
Ask family, friends, babysitters and doggy daycares to take care of your children or pets, and request a generous timeframe. Even if you think you can finish unloading the last of the boxes by 4pm, city traffic and other unforeseen obstacles may have other plans.
Pack a Moving Day Bag
With everything out of its usual place on the days surrounding your relocation, it can be a good idea to make note of things you don't want to lose track of. There will be essential items you'll need throughout moving day, overnight, and into the next day that you may want to keep within hand's reach, and avoid accidentally packing into an unlabeled box, like:
- Medication
- Toiletries
- Phone Charger
- Important Documents
- Extra Clothing
Pack a moving day bag with the essentials you'll need and make sure to always keep it somewhere it'll be easily accessed, like in your personal vehicle.
Leave Out Basic Cleaning Supplies
You should always try to clean each room of your current home as the last of the boxes gets moved out, and you most likely did a thorough job at your new residence too, but in either case it isn't uncommon to see something you missed at the last minute.
Leave out basic cleaning supplies to quickly wipe up or clear off anything you missed the first time around. We recommend things like:
- Paper Towels
- All-Purpose Cleaner
- Broom & Dust Pan
- Sanitizing Wipes
